I’ve been wanting to make this post for awhile now and since I’m so glad that I finally can, I’m staying up later than I should to put it together. Today, Russell and I went on our first date of the summer (yeah, I know, summer doesn’t officially start until next weekend), one of several that I’ve planned out for the next couple of months.
You see, every summer, we get slammed with plans and before we know it, each weekend is filled to capacity, summer is over, we haven’t done a single thing we wanted to do, and we’re left wondering where we went wrong. It’s not that all of our running around isn’t fun – we spend time with friends and family at birthday parties, baby showers, picnics, etc. But between that and the typical summer stuff, such as taking care of our garden and yard, we never seem to get around to the really fun stuff; you know, doing the kinds of things we talk about doing all winter long.
Said in another way: we get so caught up in the daily grind that we forget how to truly enjoy ourselves. And I for one am absolutely sick of living like that.
I took it upon myself to think up a fix, and the #hssweetheartsummer was born. (Yes, I gave it a cheeky and silly hashtag – don’t judge me. The summer after our high school graduation was maybe the best time Russell and I ever had together, and it would mean the world to me to recreate it as adults, even just a little bit). I put together a series of dates for us to go on all summer long…and each and every one is a surprise for Russell. He only knows the days, not what we’re going to do. He’s been a good sport about it so far, haha. Talk to me in August.
Anywho, our first adventure was today. It thunderstormed all day, so my daydreams of cruising in the truck with the windows down and sunshine pouring in were crushed. I even made a freaking playlist…grr. I was pretty worried the whole day was going to be a wash, because this particular event was outdoors. After talking it through, we decided to give it a go anyways and boy am I glad we did, because the rain cleared out and this is what we were left with:
The big surprise was that I got us tickets to attend Freedom Farms Brews & BBQ Dinner in the Field, an event put on about an hour away from us by an awesome local farm and farmer’s market (if you’re familiar, the family had a TV show awhile back called Farm Kings). We had talked about going when I saw the event notice go up on Instagram a few months back, but never made any concrete plans – another one of our “summer is over and we haven’t done a damn thing” downfalls. We just assume that we’ll get around to having fun and we almost never do, so I bought the tickets and in the planner it went.
I’m so glad that our first date of the summer was this one. It’s going to be hard to top. The menu featured two local breweries – Church Brew Works and Hofbrauhaus – and plenty of farm-to-table goodies: pulled pork, fried chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, and my new favorite, strawberry-rhubarb cobbler. We both had such a lovely time, and I am over the moon that Russell enjoyed the surprise.
Of course, there was beer involved, so I don’t think I had too much to worry about, ha.
Here’s to the first annual #hssweetheartsummer…I hope each of these dates end up being a home run with the hubs and that I don’t blow it by Labor Day weekend, haha. And a special thanks to Freedom Farms for putting together such a community-oriented, fun, and delicious event. I’m glad we were able to be a part of it.
